In-company training

The courses I teach at companies are often my favourite ones to teach. Once a week I get to bring a little change of scenery to the office. I see people who know each other as colleagues, connect in new ways. I see how people motivate each other, and when that one student who feels learning a new language is extremely hard makes a beautiful Dutch sentence, I get to enjoy watching the rest of the group jump up and applaud in shared joy.

This is the goal of my group courses: I create a safe space where people enjoy spending their time with the language, with me, and most of all, with each other. They push one another and learn as a team. In a safe space students dare to try, dare to make mistakes and in doing so, grow their confidence to use the language with each other and ‘in the wild’. 

To reach this goal, I develop flexible courses that adapt to the needs and pace of the particular group. Students get all the necessary grammar in a balanced mix of focussed work and playfulness. We use a textbook (Nederlands in Gang) and combine that with a book-club approach to explore Dutch culture. This way we’re not merely learning educational Dutch, but immediately branch out into the world around us. I encourage students from the get-go to experiment and look for ways in which they can use the language outside of the classroom.

I succeed when students tell me ‘I didn’t know learning Dutch could be fun!’ I assure you, it can be!
